Tony TS #9 - Wei Wang
Date/Time: Thursday 3/20 @ 5:00pm
Location: Dirac Library
Topic/Skill: Listening/Speaking
We started the session by finishing the videos we didn't get to last week.
Wei wrote down some terms from a video that she watched on her own, so we delved into those. We ended up spending most of our time on these, since additional context was needed for a lot of them. We also talked about some theories of teaching, such as linguistics vs. semantics.
We also got an impromptu introduction to some cultural topics, such as when you should/shouldn't use certain phrases. One phrase from the video she chose was "Grow a pair". It was funny and difficult trying to explain the meaning of the phrase, as well as why it's taboo yet very common. It led to a conversation about American comedy and how content made for broad, mature audiences can still contain crass and conventionally inappropriate topics/phrases.
Next week, we will be doing a cultural lesson on how the American government works. Since she watches a lot of current event media, she was confused on why certain things in government were controversial and how the whole process worked. I plan to find some explanatory videos and create some diagrams for how everything works.
