Tony TS #7 - Wei Wang

Topic/Skill: Pre-evaluation

I met with Wei Wang for our first tutoring session. She is a former PhD student who dropped due to the language barrier posing problems for communication. We discussed our short and long term goals.

She speaks at an intermediate level, and wants to make the leap to advanced level. Her speaking is a little choppy, which is why she wants to primarily focus on speaking and listening. We can have solid conversations with a few pauses to explain lower frequency vocabulary. She enjoys keeping up with current events and politics, so vocab will include common words and themes associated with that.

We will be meeting at 5:00pm at Dirac going forward. Our next session however will be at Strozier at 4pm due to spring break hours.

I enjoyed getting to know her and practice. We will focus primarily on dual listening/speaking activities to practice conversational skills and comfort. Vocab will focus on low frequency words.

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
