McKenzie CO 4/ TS 3: Listening
Date/Time: January 28th, 2:00pm
Listening Group 1 - Dr. Felicia
Topic/Skill: Personal Descriptions, Prepositions, Daily Routines
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Felicia began the class by explaining what activities students would be working on for the day and reviewing any questions students had from class the previous day.
Classroom Management: Students worked independently, watching the recording Dr. Felicia had provided on the following topics: Personal Descriptions, Prepositions, and Daily Routines. They then completed the corresponding worksheets for the class. While students were working independently, Dr. Felicia walked around the classroom, ensuring students stayed on track, answered questions, and made corrections as needed.
Materials: Computer and Projector
Student Participation: For today's class, students worked independently on their laptops with their headphones on, reviewing the listening vocabulary and then completing the corresponding worksheets.
Feedback Provided: Dr. Felicia provided input as students worked independently. Dr. Felicia answered questions and provided corrections and guidance to students as needed.
Lesson Learned: In Dr. Felicia's listening class, I learned how to guide students to the correct answer versus just telling them. I observed Dr. Felicia providing corrections to students, and she would often try to guide them to the correct answer instead of telling them straight up. This allowed students to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the English language because they could come to the answer independently.
Tutoring:
During Dr. Felicia's listening class, I worked with my tutee, My Phuong, and another foundations-level student, Ana Paula. To begin class, I listened to the video with both students. After listening to the audio once through, I asked my tutees if they had questions about what they just listened to. We then listened once more, and after our second listen-through, we began working on the worksheet. The first set of questions on the worksheet was simple questions about the personal description audio. We went through the questions together, and I helped guide my tutees to the correct answer if they were confused. I also provided any spelling or grammar mistakes I saw in their answers. There was a set of questions for each of the individuals described in the video, so we made it through the first few sets of questions before class ended. Throughout the tutoring/class session, I answered my tutees' questions and provided spelling and grammar corrections. I assisted Dr. Felicia with any extra tasks she needed to be completed during the class.
