Tony TS #1 - Dojun

Topic/Skill: Pre-evaluation

 I met with Dojun for our first tutoring session. We got to know each other and determine our short term goals for the tutoring sessions and our long term goals for language competency.

He speaks with excellent grammar and vocabulary, albeit slowly. I was very impressed. He was a bit bashful when I tried to tell him this. He wants to improve his grammar as much as possible and increase his comfort with speaking and listening at faster paces. I told him that I naturally talk fast, so he will get plenty of practice with that.

We both work full time and in opposite time zones (+14hrs in Seoul, South Korea), so we will be meeting on weekends going forward. Our next session will likely be Sunday at 9am EST.

I enjoyed getting to know him and figure out his comfort level. I think our best path forward will be a few grammar-in-use activities to perfect his grammar, plus casual conversation practice to increase his comfort level and speaking/interpreting speed.

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
