McKenzie TS 2: My Phuong

I had my second tutoring session with My Phuong right after our first meeting during Dr. Felicia's listening class. Since, during our first session, we went straight into working on material, our second session was focused on learning about My Phuong and her English learning goals. My Phuong is from Vietnam, and she moved to the US six months ago. My Phuong lives with her niece, who has been living in the US for a few years and is fluent in English. My Phoung explained that her niece has acted as her translator for the past six months and has been extremely helpful in guiding her around the Tallahassee area. So far, My Phuong has really enjoyed her time in the US and enjoys going to the farmers market with her niece on the weekends. My Phoung said she learned some English in school in Vietnam but hopes to improve her English skills through the CIES program. So far, My Phuong has really enjoyed all of the classes she's taking in the CIES program, though she finds the writing class the most difficult. After learning about My Phuong, she explained that during our tutoring sessions, she mostly wanted to work on her writing and speaking skills. Regarding her writing skills, she hopes to improve her vocabulary and write complete sentences in the correct form. Regarding her speaking skills, she hopes to improve her vocabulary and pronunciation skills.

We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
