McKenzie CO 2/3: Speaking Group 4

Topic / Skill: Controversial Topics and American Government Presentations 

Teacher Presentation: Dr. Rios began his speaking class by introducing me to the class. Dr. Rios then began a rapid-fire speaking exercise. There was a list of 33 controversial topics; students picked a random number and had to give their opinion on the topic that corresponded to that number. After the students had answered, other students could also share their views. After a few rounds of rapid-fire questions, Dr. Rios worked with students on their American Government presentations. 

Classroom Management: Dr. Rios maintained a very well-structured conversation that gave space for students to answer the questions sufficiently. Dr. Rios encouraged all students to participate as much as possible, and maintained a very calm and relaxing environment throughout the class. 

Materials: Computer and Projector 

Student Participation: Dr. Rios created a warm and welcoming environment that encouraged students to participate in the group discussions. As students answered questions, Dr. Rios would ask follow-up questions and extend the conversation to the rest of the class. This was a good way to keep the entire class engaged while further expanding students through processes. Dr. Rios would also introduce new vocabulary to students as the conversation continued to develop. 

Feedback Provided: During the second half of the class, Dr. Rios provided feedback to students on their American Government projects. Since this was the advanced group, Dr. Rios made sure to correct every grammar, pronunciation, and word choice mistake that students made. 

Lesson Learned: Dr. Rios class gave me really good insight on how to encourage students to participate and how to continue expanding students vocabulary. Dr. Rios made sure to ask lots of follow up questions as students gave their answers which allowed students to continue expanding their vocabulary and knowledge of American culture.

I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
