McKenzie CO 1/ TS 1: Listening
Date/Time: January 15th, 2:00pm
Listening Group 1 - Dr. Felicia
Topic/Skill: The family, classroom, and memory/motivation vocabulary listening review
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Felicia began the class by introducing the TEFL students observing the class today to her students.
Classroom Management: Students worked independently, reviewing vocabulary listening sections and completing a worksheet corresponding to the listening vocabulary videos Dr. Felicia posted. While students were working independently, Dr. Felicia walked around the classroom, making sure students were staying on track, answering questions, and making corrections as needed.
Materials: Computer and Projector
Student Participation: For today's class, students worked independently on their laptops with their headphones on, reviewing the listening vocabulary and then completing the corresponding worksheets.
Feedback Provided: Dr. Felicia was walking around the classroom while students were working providing corrections and guidance as needed. Students were also encouraged to ask questions when they needed extra assistance on the assignment.
Lesson Learned: The listening class I observed was a mixed-level class. Students listened to the same audio but received different assignments corresponding to their level. I found it very interesting and helpful to see how Dr. Felicia adapted her lesson to the various levels in the classroom while still using the same core material.
Tutoring:
During Dr. Felicia's listening class, I met my tutee, My Phoung, for the first time. My Phoung is a foundations-level English learner, so despite Dr. Felicia adapting her lesson to be more level, My Phoung still needed the extra help. During our tutoring session, I listened to the audio once through with My Phoung, and then after our first listen, we discussed what she thought the listening material was about. After our discussion we listened to the audio a second time. I then had My Phoung explain the audio to me without any prompt questions to check her comprehension. Then we moved onto the set of questions that Dr. Felcia had prepared for the assigned audio. The audio was all about memory and motivation, and students had to write an eight-sentence summary about the audio. I had My Phoung tell me what she wanted each sentence to be about and then helped her write it. I would first have her attempt the sentence on her own and then offer linguistic support when needed. After the sentence was complete I would fix any grammatical errors.
