Tutoring Session #3 

Friday 1/31/25 at Strozier Library


For our third tutoring session, Karim and I continued to work on the Past Perfect Tense. We reviewed the usage and conjugation structure of the verb tense and he took a brief quiz to review what he learned at our last session. From there we began the past continuous tense. We watched a couple videos about the verb tense in practice and then did a few fill in the blank exercises, as well as some where you take the Simple past tense and change it to past continuous. Additionally, Karim expressed interest in working on reading comprehension, so this is what we will be building on for our next sessions. He has a midterm next Tuesday, where they must read an article and answer questions about it, so I will help formulate a lesson plan for his reading skills. Karim is progressing very well, and continues to show a high understanding for many concepts, and picks up new information pretty quickly.

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
