In our most recent tutoring session, Karim and I worked on reading comprehension, as he had an exam coming up that he wanted some help with. More specifically we worked on reading comprehension techniques -- for Karim, top-down processing. He provided me with an article assigned to him, so I created some pre-reading questions and some vocab words to look out for. With these questions and words in mind, I then had him quickly scan the article to corroborate with the main ideas in the questions. He then had a nearly perfect understanding of the article and the previously unknown vocab words. We then read a news article about the USA imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico. With the same top-down processing techniques with his prior knowledge of current events and broke down the article. I would stop us periodically whenever he got to an unknown word, and I'd guide him to finding the definition himself given the context. Additionally, I would stop him and correct pronunciation mistakes if they occurred. I learned that Arabic speakers have trouble with words that have a 'P' sound, as this does not exist in Arabic, and he often pronounced it with a 'B' sound. I stressed to him to try and remember whenever he sees a P word, to think about the pronunciation.
