Isabelle TS#9 with Livio
Date/Time: Friday, February 14th, 2025, 12:00-1:00 PM
Location: Online on Zoom
Topic/Skill: Grammar (Difference between 'to' and 'for')
Feedback provided to the tutee: Today was Livio and I's first session in a week, not to mention our first online session after he traveled back home to Italy, so I wanted to make it a little lighter in terms of content. Today we focused on the differences between 'to' and 'for' as prepositions because he tends to use them interchangeably. First I explained the difference between the two to him and also modeled how to use them in sentences by showing him examples. Then we worked together to create sentences using each of the two prepositions correctly. Any time he made a mistake, I would ask him about the grammar of the sentence (ex. there is a verb there, so would you use to or for?).
Lesson(s) about tutoring: I learned that just because I think a lesson will be easy, doesn't mean it will be. I thought that this lesson was pretty straight forward but it actually ended up being a little difficult for Livio. Maybe it is because he hasn't practiced his English much lately, but it also reminded me that I need to think from the perspective of the learner, not the teacher/native speaker when considering the difficulty of a lesson. Livio was eventually able to grasp the content and use it in sentences of his own, however, it was definitely more difficult than I intended it to be. This is something I'll consider for my future lessons!
