Isabelle TS#6 with Livio
Date/Time: Monday, February 3rd, 2025, 5:30-6:30 PM
Location: The Student Union at FSU
Topic/Skill: Help with a presentation for a class
Feedback provided to the tutee: Livio and I spent the entire tutoring period reviewing and revising a presentation he was preparing for class on Tuesday (the day after our session). First, Livio had presented to me his entire presentation from start to finish and I took notes of feedback and mistakes we could work on. Then we went through the entire presentation together and I asked him questions about the things he made mistakes on. For example, in one sentence, Livio wrote, "... this wood has not imperfections," and I asked him what he meant by that sentence. Livio was able to figure out the errors on his own most of the time after I asked about them only one time, but in other instances, I would remind him of certain grammar rules or give him examples that would lead him to the answer. This way, Livio was able to improve his presentation before giving it the next day!
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that situational English can be a really difficult thing to teach and to learn because it goes against the "traditional" rules of English, therefore, it's super important to offer your tutee additional linguistic support in these moments, especially if they are losing motivation. By making English learning a fun experience, especially for more difficult concepts, the potential of your tutee getting back in touch with their intrinsic motivation become so much greater!
