Isabelle CO#5 Olivia James' Group 3 Listening Class
Date & Time: Thursday, February 6th, 2025, 2:00 PM - 2:50 PM
Topic/Skill: Listening Skills
Teacher Presentation: Miss Olivia's listening lesson plan revolved around three different Ted Talk videos that covered the content of their textbook (music therapy). First, she asked the students some review questions to jog their memories of the content they learned about. She was then able to play two of the three videos in this session and frequently paused the videos to ask the students questions and start discussions about the videos. She also took the captions off of these videos for this specific group level and spoke with lots of gestures to indicate what it was that she was speaking about.
Classroom Management: Olivia managed the class largely by continuing to ask them questions, start discussions, and just overall keep them verbally engaged. She also gave the students worksheets to refer to during the class that contained a vocabulary list as well as a list of questions they would use for the following class.
Materials: Projector, laptop, access to YouTube, worksheets.
Student Participation: The students participated by answering Olivia's questions, engaging in the group discussions, writing on their worksheets/taking notes, and watching the videos throughout the class.
Feedback Provided: Olivia would provide feedback by prompting the students with questions if their answers in the discussion didn't align with the content of the videos. She would give the students a chance to self-correct or think critically about their mistakes instead of correcting the mistake herself.
Lessons on teaching you learned: What I learned about teaching was how important it is to consider every single part of your lesson. It was clear how much Olivia considered every aspect of her lesson plan because it all made sense in a listening learning environment from the videos connecting to the textbook lesson, the specific questions and feedback she provided for the students, to the questions and vocabulary on the worksheets were not only level appropriate but also topic appropriate! This is certainly something new I learned today!
