Ariana CO 4: Speaking Group 1/2 - Ryan Flemming

Date & Time: January 28 1:00 PM - 1:55 PM

Topic/ Skill: Speaking

Teacher Presentation: Mr. Ryan began by covering the class agenda for the day and the week. He let them know what they'd be working on for the day and updated them about his expectations for their presentations they would be giving soon. 

Classroom Management: The environment for the listening class was very relaxed and a little less structured than the other classes I observed because each student was working on individual assignments. 

Materials: computer, projector, headphones, phone

Student Participation: Each student was working by themselves using headphones, laptops, and phones to record themselves speaking. They were also working on a project to present to the class about their "Secret City". 

Feedback Provided: I asked Mr. Ryan how he evaluates their recordings. He explained to me he listened to them in his office either by himself or with the student and he would make notes to correct students on grammar and pronunciation errors. 

Lesson Learned: I like that the "Secret City" assignment gave students to work on something they were interested in and express creative freedom. The students took it as an opportunity to share about their home countries and cultures which were interesting.

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
