Jade TS #2 - Stephanie + Paola

Date/Time: Saturday, January 18th 1:00pm-3:00pm

Location: Tutee's home

Topic/Skill: Introductions; Needs assessment; Conversation practice (worked on telling stories with the past tense, talked about hobbies and interests)

Feedback provided to the tutee: When my tutee made an error, I would repeat back the corrected sentence and have her repeat it. For example, "I go to China to play Volleyball tournament last year." "Oh, so you went to China to play in a volleyball tournament last year, right?" This seemed to work well with her.

Lessons learned:

Stephanie is an immigrant from Colombia wishing to learn English to use in her everyday life. She is very timid when it comes to speaking English (and frequently tried to resort to Spanish) so I want to build her confidence and encourage her to try and attempt to answer in English first, even if she isn't sure if it will be correct. She also told me she has trouble understanding native speakers due to how fast they normally talk, so I want to work on her listening comprehension as well. Based on our session today, she is upper elementary/lower intermediate.

Paola, Stephanie's friend, is a music teacher living in Colombia who wants to improve her English for travel purposes. She joined in on today's session as she is visiting Tallahassee for a month.
