Topic/Skill: Surveys

Teacher Presentation: Ms. Olivia started the class by introducing today's topic: conducting surveys and presenting survey results. She first handed out the survey template with the intructions the students would be using. She then presented a previous student's survey and PPT example from a past year on the projector while going over the details she wanted to emphasize. Then, she instructed the students to start thinking about their survey topics.

Classroom Management: Ms. Olivia kept the students on schedule by circling around and monitoring the students' progress. For example, she would go to each individual student and make sure they were on the right track. She would periodically go to the front of the room to announce what the students should be working on. ("Now, everyone should be starting to write their survey questions.")

Materials: Projector, handouts, pencils, PowerPoint

Student Participation: For the majority of the class, students worked on constructing their survey. They also brainstormed where they would find the participants (in the Student Union, on Landis Green, etc.) when conducting the survey.

Feedback Provided: Ms. Olivia guided each individual student to crafting thought-provoking survey questions according to their topic. If a question was too controversial, or too close-ended, she would prompt the student to brainstorm other questions. She gave feedback on the wording of the questions as well as the way the students read them aloud.

Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that each class can have a different dynamic, and that the teacher is capable of adapting their teaching style according to said dynamic. For example, Ms. Olivia looked for student feedback and opinions frequently, asking whether they prefer to work in groups or whether they prefer to conduct the survey today or Monday. Giving the students some choice in their learning ensures that they will feel more engaged and included in the class.
