Jade CO #1 - Flemming Group 1/2 Speaking Class
Date & Time: Friday, January 17, 2025, 10:50 AM - 12:30 PM
Topic/Skill: Speaking skills
Teacher Presentation: Mr. Flemming started with a clear agenda and overview of today's class. He then demonstrated how to play Guess Who and Go Fish. Lastly, he administered a quiz.
Classroom Management: Mr. Flemming had a strong structure for the flow of the class which kept the students on track. He frequently walked around to listen to group conversations, and constantly provided live feedback and direction to the students.
Materials: Personal whiteboards and markers, main whiteboard and projector, a deck of cards, and 2 Guess Who game sets.
Student Participation: This class was highly participatory. Students were constantly broken into groups throughout the session in order to practice speaking. For example, students practiced using descriptive words through "Guess Who," and practiced talking about their morning routines with each other, among other activities.
Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming had various ways of providing feedback. He would use a small whiteboard during breakout group sessions to write down the verbal mistake of the student, prompting them to correct it/see the error. He would also use interjection techniques such as "Sorry, what was that again?" or "Could you repeat that?" so that the students could self-correct.
Lessons on teaching you learned: This observation taught me the proper flow of an ESL class for beginners and the proper ways to go about correcting students mid-activity. It also gave me various ideas on how to use interactive games (such as Go Fish) as a tool for speaking practice. I also learned that lessons don't have to have as much lecturing as I had thought, as this class was full of hands-on activities rather than just lecturing.
