Topic/Skill: New Vocabulary in Use/Writing/Speaking

Feedback provided to the tutee: For today's lesson, I brought a list of translated vocabulary words that Livio uses frequently for work but does not know the English equivalents. Together, we created sentences using each new vocabulary word in their correct contexts. I had Livio come up with the sentences and speak them aloud while I typed them into the vocabulary sheet. This way, he could practice his speaking (which is a priority for him) as well as learn how to use the new vocabulary words in speech.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that you can take advantage of your tutee's feedback for future lesson plans. For example, if my tutee and I were working on a particular lesson plan, but a different English problem or concern arises from that activity, it can be noted and incorporated into the next lesson. This highlighted the importance of tutor monitoring for me!

Tony TS #21 - Extra session/recap with Dojun

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Tony TS #18 - Wei Wang

Date/Time: Tuesday 5/6 @ 5:00pm Location: Dirac Library Topic/Skill: American culture and news For our final lesson, we had a lesson on American news sources. I covered the difference between opinionated and objective sources, as well as different forms of media like classic news outlets, podcasts, and blog pages. We talked about how to spot biases based on the language used in the headlines and throughout the articles. This was our final lesson. I told Wei Wang to keep in touch if she had any questions or needed any advice on different things. I really enjoyed teaching her; she had a high intermediate knowledge and I hope that our practice sessions increased her confidence in speaking and interacting with English speakers.
