Ariana TS #2 – Nejoud

Topic/ Skill: Introductions and Reading/ Pronunciation

Feedback Provided: I met with my second tutee Nejoud for the first time. She is from Saudi Arabia and has previously had a TEFL tutor. We introduced ourselves and talked about where we were both from. She is in America so she can get her PhD in statistics because she is a lecturer in her home country. We read a few local news articles I selected. While her reading comprehension skills are strong, her pronunciation has room for improvement but it is not bad. 

Lessons Learned: Even though Nejoud and my previous tutee are both testing at the same IELTS level, their strengths and weaknesses vary greatly. This was a good lesson for me that although things may look the same on paper, they may actually vary greatly in practice. She wants to work on listening skills, especially with speed and different accents so I will try to come up with some listening activities for her.

Date/Time: Sunday 6/1 @ 10:00am Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Recap I finished my 20 tutoring hours, but Dojun and I had previously scheduled our final lesson. We recapped our sessions and I asked what he liked, what he wanted to know more of, etc. We also talked about ways to continue practicing English in the future. I introduced him to some American news networks and taught him the differences between more reliable, objective sources and more sensationalized, comedic sources. Dojun plans to use English more in his line of work by communicating with American business partners and clients in English when the opportunity presents itself. He has been busy with work, but hopes to one day return to the states for vacations and practice there as well.

Isabelle TS#18/19 with Livio

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (two sessions) Location: Online on Zoom Topic/Skill: Active and Passive Voice Feedback provided to the tutee: For this session, Livio and I worked on the differences between the active and passive voices. This topic came up during our last lesson when we were learning about writing emails in American English, since Livio did not fully understand the difference between these two tones. The activity we did was modeled after an activity we did for a different lesson that he really enjoyed, where we used his social media page as a vehicle for the activity. I asked him to write sentences about the image on his Instagram in both the active and passive voice so he could learn the difference between the two in practice. Max TS#20 - Karim

 4/29  In Tuesday's session, Karim and I continued working on some more advanced level reading comprehension and conversation. We have been reading lots of international affairs related news articles so Karim can prepare for his master's program with the International Affairs school. The past couple sessions have generally been conversation between Karim and I where I speak to him as I would my friends, so he is more exposed to more everyday speech. When we converse I jump in to correct him or give definitions to any unknown vocabulary.
